A few days later, I was sitting in the kitchen peeling potatoes. Martha had shown me how to do it and lent me a colorful scarf to keep my hair back with. I probably looked ridiculous, but I didn’t care. She was going to show me how they turned the hard lumps into roast potatoes, and I was intrigued. I’d always flicked over cooking shows when watching TV, never the slightest bit interested, but something about touching, smelling, and eating the end results was much more appealing.

A young female shifter plonked herself next to me with a grin. Jennie? I thought to myself. Learning everyone’s name was hard.

She picked up one of the potatoes I had peeled and chopped it into quarters with a knife, and chucked it into a huge pot next to her.

“I don’t know what you do to Erik, but he has been so happy and chilled since you’ve been here,” she said with a grin and picked up another potato. I tried to read her. She was younger than me. Blond hair cut really short and spiky in places. Brown eyes that seemed guileless.

Conversations in the coven were always laced with triple meanings, threats, bribes for information. Never just the inane chatting the pack seemed to do. But I wasn’t stupid enough to let my guard down.

“So, I’m glad you are here,” she said, seemingly unaware of my suspicion. Maybe I was being a jerk. “Probably a bit selfishly, as my parents were hoping he’d choose me as we’re not blood-related and being mated to an omega is good for an Alpha and all that.” She rattled on. So, she was Jennie, an omega and Duncan’s sister. Duncan, who had been running out of the room anytime I had entered.

“But Erik is such a bossy, controlling prick, I don’t know how you put up with him, but I’m glad you do,” she finished and flushed before looking away.

I blinked and tried to puzzle it out. Was I supposed to tell Erik this? Would Jennie be punished? Was Jennie testing me to see if I could be trusted? Which was the better side to play? Not tell Erik, in the hope of getting better information later on?

Knowledge was power. Should I be building a spider’s web of it, seeking to control what goes where and who knows what? Become the power behind Erik’s throne as I was his mate?

“I’m sorry,” said Jennie sheepishly, regarding me with calm brown eyes. I sighed. Why was everything always so complicated.

“Would Erik punish you if he found out what you have been saying about him?” I asked.

Her brown eyes went wide with surprise. “What? Of course not! I tell him to his face often enough.” She cocked her head and regarded me thoughtfully for a moment.

“You grew up in a really shitty place, didn’t you,” she commented. I looked away and shrugged. Something about her sincerity and calm acceptance was uncomfortably emotional. I did not want to burst into tears again.
